Planning new flooring in an older house? Test what is under your feet first. Vinyl tile, sheet-vinyl backing and flooring glue are all on EPA's list of possible asbestos materials, and none can be judged by sight. We test old floors and clear the ones that need it before your installer arrives.

The same service is available in Arlington and Pantego.

Floors we handle

Vinyl tile and black glue

Small square tiles and the black glue below them are two materials, so they are tested as two layers and can give different results. A positive floor comes up by hand and stays wet. EPA warns against power strippers on flooring that may contain asbestos.

Sheet vinyl and its backing

On sheet vinyl, the backing is what EPA names, not the printed top. Both layers go to the lab, and we look underneath for an older floor too.

Floors laid on a concrete slab

Some houses on a slab have old tile glued straight to the concrete. Lifting it leaves glue behind in patches, so your installer needs to know whether the slab will end up bare or coated. Grinding positive glue would put it in the air, so we plan another way.

Floors under carpet or newer flooring

Laminate, carpet or a later tile job can cover an original floor. Before demolition, the inspector samples every buried layer the work will reach.

Fitting it into your remodel

Book the inspector while installer quotes are still coming in. The order runs testing, removal, cleanup and inspection, then new flooring, and early lab results let those quotes reflect what is really in the room.

Afterward you get the report and a list of what came out and what stayed. File it with the deed papers for the next project.

Frequently asked questions

Does my 1960s kitchen tile have asbestos?

Possibly, and looks will not tell you. Only a lab test on a sample will.

Can I just cover it up with new flooring?

Sometimes. A positive floor in good condition can stay under a new one if nobody will disturb it. Whoever works on it next needs to know what is underneath, since sanding or lifting it later means handling asbestos.
